Adelaide Sewing Classes

Learn, make and sew together in Magill

Skygarden is a small studio on Magill Road, in Adelaide's eastern suburbs, where you can learn to sew, or come along and sew with others who love it too. Complete beginners, people coming back to it and people halfway through a project all sit at the same table. Some come for a class, some for the company, and most stay for both.

All levels

Wherever you're starting from

First time at a machine or picking it back up after years away, there's a place for you here.

Sew together

Come for the company

Classes are designed for connection. There's time to swap tips and meet other creators. If the social side is what you're after, Sewing Club is an unguided session just for sewing together.

Small groups

Time to ask anything

Most classes have no more than 6 people, so you get real time with your tutor and never feel rushed.

The studio

The space you need to focus on creating

Most of us don't have room at home for an overlocker or a pressing station, so I've set them up in the studio for you to use. If you're tracing off a pattern, the projector is upstairs too.

What to bring

Every class is different

Each class lists what is provided. Some have everything ready for you and some you'll only need a pencil for. For garment classes you'll bring your own fabric, and I'm always happy to help you choose it. If you don't have a machine, you can hire one of ours for $15 a session.

Claire, sewing tutor and owner of Skygarden Fabrics

Your teacher

Hi, I'm Claire

I've been sewing my own clothes for over 20 years, and I've taught plenty of people to sew. Watching someone grow in confidence and creativity at the machine is my favourite thing about it.

I've also studied teaching, so I know everyone learns differently. Whether you've never threaded a needle or you're picking it back up after a break, I'll meet you where you're at.

Skygarden started as a sewing weekend with my sports team. Every year more people joined in, and now it's a studio on Magill Road, open all year.

★★★★★"I booked a Studio+ class this morning and Claire performed some expert alterations that I do not have the experience in seeing, and now I have a great fitting Ashton top to wear with my new Clo Bias Skirt next week."

Questions

Do I need experience for a class?

It depends on the class. Every listing has a "Skill Level" indicator showing what experience it's aimed at, so you can check before you book. We cater for all levels, from complete beginners through to confident sewists.

Can I come on my own?

Absolutely, most people do. Plus you might meet your new sewing bestie.

Do I need my own machine?

No. You can hire one of ours for $15 a session, or bring your own if you'd rather learn on it.

What do I need to bring?

It depends on the class, and each listing says what's provided and what to bring. For most classes you'll need a basic kit: fabric scissors, snips, pins, a marking tool, a seam ripper and a tape measure. You can buy all of these in the shop.

Will I finish my project in class?

For project and garment classes, yes, you'll generally finish the item in the session. Some more complex projects are finish-at-home, and multi-week projects might come with a bit of homework between sessions.

How big are the classes?

Each class takes 4 to 6 people. I set the number by what we're making: a project that needs more table space or more one-on-one help gets a smaller group. Sewing Club takes up to 8.

What if a class is full?

Add yourself to the waitlist. If a spot opens up, we'll be in touch. Plus, we'll know we need more sessions of that class!

Where are you?

1/557 Magill Road, Magill SA 5072, in Adelaide's eastern suburbs. There's parking out the front and the 106 bus stops nearby.
